Scenario #1

"No it's our choice Mr. President."

Article I, Section 8
"The Congress shall have Power To ...declare War...."

Obama & ISIS

This article discusses the eruption in debate over President Obama wanting congress to agree to send AUMF against to ISIS, President Obama believes that along with the people of Iraq, Syria, and the Middle East, that ISIS also threatens the U.S. national security. This is the argument that the President presents to congress in order to declare war on ISIS.

This article relates to Article I, Section 8 of the Constitution that states, “The Congress shall have the power to declare war…” The article talks about a situation where the president has to get consent from congress to act on something involving war. President Obama has his reasons of why he wants to declare war on ISIS but some republicans in congress don’t agree with the details of his wishes. Some republicans believe that Obama’s plan against ISIS is too limited and not flexible enough for military leaders. When congress and the President don’t agree on plans with war, it is up to Congress to make the decision, they have the power.

The political cartoon displays the relationship between the President and Congress when it concerns war. It shows that the decision of war belongs to the congress, even if the President has access. The cartoon also shows a quote that says, “Technically, you may need to ask the doormat permission.” This quote shows that even the President has access to go to war, it’s really congress’ call and they get the say so.

The political cartoon relates to Article I, Section 8 in the constitution because it is displaying how the congress has power to declare war. The president may have a key to the door that lead to war, but clearly the congress holds more power when it comes to war. This political cartoon clearly shows how the President and Congress operates when it comes to making decisions pertaining to war.
